Police confiscated an ancient three-headed statue of the goddess Hecate in the trunk of a vehicle in Turkey's southern Denizli province in an anti-smuggling operation, Turkish media have reported.

Anti-smuggling and Organized Crime Police units found the statue after intercepting the vehicle on the road. Four suspects were detained, reports said.
Archeologists noted that the statue appears to be from the Roman era. Hecate was a protective deity, guardian of gates and crossroads.

According to the Greek traveller Pausanias claims the sculptor Alkamenes (5th century BC) was the first to create a triple headed statue of Hecate.
The statue was taken to the local museum directorate, reports said.
