Inbreeding and population/demographic shifts could have led to Neanderthal extinction


Small populations, inbreeding, and random demographic fluctuations could have been enough to cause Neanderthal extinction, according to a study published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Krist Vaesen from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, and colleagues.

Paleoanthropologists agree that Neanderthals disappeared around 40,000 years ago--about the same time that anatomically modern humans began migrating into the Near East and Europe. However, the role modern humans played in Neanderthal extinction is disputed. In this study, the authors used population modelling to explore whether Neanderthal populations could have vanished without external factors such as competition from modern humans.


Using data from extant hunter-gatherer populations as parameters, the authors developed population models for simulated Neanderthal populations of various initial sizes (50, 100, 500, 1,000, or 5,000 individuals). They then simulated for their model populations the effects of inbreeding, Allee effects (where reduced population size negatively impacts individuals' fitness), and annual random demographic fluctuations in births, deaths, and the sex ratio, to see if these factors could bring about an extinction event over a 10,000-year period.

The population models show that inbreeding alone was unlikely to have led to extinction (this only occurred in the smallest model population). However, reproduction-related Allee effects where 25 percent or fewer Neanderthal females gave birth within a given year (as is common in extant hunter-gatherers) could have caused extinction in populations of up to 1,000 individuals. In conjunction with demographic fluctuations, Allee effects plus inbreeding could have caused extinction across all population sizes modelled within the 10,000 years allotted.


The population models are limited by their parameters, which are based on modern human hunter-gatherers and exclude the impact of the Allee effect on survival rates. It's also possible that modern humans could have impacted Neanderthal populations in ways which reinforced inbreeding and Allee effects, but are not reflected in the models.

However, by showing demographic issues alone could have led to Neanderthal extinction, the authors note these models may serve as a "null hypothesis" for future competing theories--including the impact of modern humans on Neanderthals.

The authors add: "Did Neanderthals disappear because of us? No, this study suggests. The species' demise might have been due merely to a stroke of bad, demographic luck."

The Egyptian Minister of Antiquities Dr. Khaled El-Enany announced  that a new discovery in Saqqara necropolis was carried out by an Egyptian archaeological mission led by Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.


The discovery took place at the sacred animals necropolis, where excavations carried out by the mission last year uncovered the exceptionally well-preserved tomb of the 5th Dynasty royal priest Wahtye and dozens of animal mummies: of cats, cobras, crocodiles and even scarab beetles.

Dr. El-Enany explains that today’s discovery includes a large collection of 75 wooden and bronze statues of cats of different shapes and sizes; a group of mummified cats found inside 25 wooden boxes with lids decorated with hieroglyphic texts; wooden statues of animals and birds among them the apis bull, the mongoose, the ibis, the falcon and the ancient Egyptian god Anubis in the animal form.

The mission has also found, he continues, a very distinguished large scarab made of stone hidden inside a wooden box, two small size scarabs made of wood and sandstone; three statues of crocodiles inside them found remains of small crocodiles’ mummies.

A collection of ancient Egyptian deities was also unearthed, said Dr. El-Enany, including 73 bronze statuettes depicting god Osiris; six wooden statues of god Ptah-Sokar; 11 wooden and faience statues of the lioness god Sekhmet as well as a beautifully carved statues of goddess Neith wearing the crown of Lower Egypt.

A relief bearing the name of king Psamtik I was also discovered along with a collection of statues of Cobra; amulets; faience amulets of different shapes and sizes; wooden and clay mummies masks and a collection of papyri decorated with drawings showing goddess Tawert.

El-Enay describes the discovery as “a museum by itself as hundred objects have been unearthed here at the Bubastian necropolis in saqqara.” He said that these artifacts belong to the 26 th Dynasty of the seventh century BC, considered as the renaissance era.

During the conference El-Enany announced that today is not the last discovery of the year but there will be another one next month before celebrating the Christmas. He said that studies revealed that five of these mummies may belong to lion cubs as studies revealed. El-Enany pointed out that French Egyptologist,  Alain Zivie has previously uncovered near  this necropolis a skeleton of a lion.

Dr. Mostafa Waziri, said that the most distinguished items of this discovery are the five mummies of big cats which probably are lion cubs. According to the CT-scan carried out in two of these mummies revealed that the mummies for 95 per cent belong to lion cubs according to the size and shape of the bones of the mummies. But more studies will be carried out for more details.

8,000-year old structure unearthed on former Greek island of Imbros


A structure believed to be around 8,000-years-old was unearthed on the former Greek island of Imbros off the western coast of Turkey, according to the head of the excavation team speaking to Turkish media sources.

“During this years’ excavation work, we have found a structure that we believe dates back to around 6,000 BC,” Burcin Erdogu from Trakya University, archaeologist and head of the excavation team said.

Excavations in the Ugurlu-Zeytinlik mound in the northwestern province of Canakkale’s Gokceada (Imbros) district had earlier unearthed a 7,000-year-old structure complex.

Erdogu said the new excavation will shed light on the history of Gokceada island, which dates back to 8,800 years.


“This structure is an important discovery both for the Aegean islands and western Anatolia,” she said. She added that the T-shaped monument is an obelisk–like, four-sided tapering structure, ending in pyramidion.

It is made of two pieces, interconnected by seven-metre-long walls. It is reminiscent of the standing stones in Gobeklitepe, an archaeological site located in Turkey's southeastern Sanliurfa province.

Erdogu said it was the general thought that public structures, such as temples, were disappearing through the near East. “The monumental structures seem like part of an area where people gathered and held some activities and rituals,” she added.

48 early Byzantine oil lamps found in southeast Turkey


Archaeologists in southeastern Turkey's Diyarbakir have discovered 48 ancient lamps dating back around 1,500 years. The lamps were discovered during excavations at the Zerzevan Castle, located in the city's Cinar district.

The excavations are being led by assistant professor Aytac Coskun from Dicle University's Department of Archaeology. He said the lamps, which are believed to be dating back to the Late Roman.Early Byzantine period, would provide more information about the castle's history.

Coskun said the place where the lamps were discovered could have been an ancient shop. "Each lamp has a different sign on it, including sun, stars or letters sometimes. They all have a different meaning," Coskun said.


The lamps were unearthed near a 1,700-year-old Roman-era underground Mithras temple, which was discovered in 2017.

The castle is situated on a 55,200-square-meter area surrounded with walls stretching 12 to 15 metres high and 1,200 metres long, along with a 21-metre high watchtower and guard castle.

Excavations near the Demirolcek neighbourhood, located 13 kilometres from the Cinar district, have been ongoing since 2014 with the help of Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Diyarbakir Museum, the Diyarbakir governorship, the Cinar district governorship and Dicle University.

The vast space also includes a church, administrative buildings, ruins of ancient homes, grain and weapon storage facilities, an underground temple, underground shelters, rock tombs and water channels.


Previously, an underground church and shelter with a capacity to hold 400 people, houses and hidden passages were unearthed.

The Zerzevan Castle is situated along the ancient route of military premises and located on a 124-metre-high rocky hill in a strategic location between Amida and Dara. The settlement overlooks the entire valley and once controlled a large area on a key, ancient trade path. Once a strategic Roman border garrison town, the castle also witnessed the clashes between Romans and Sassanians.

The first settlement was named "Samachi" and while it is not certain when it was built, the excavations are close to revealing its age. The castle walls were repaired at the time of Byzantine Emperor Anastasios (AD 491-518) and Justinian (AD 527-565) while some parts were completely rebuilt.

Roman-era sarcophagus with skeleton found in Turkey


A 2,000-year-old sarcophagus including skeleton of a woman was found during road construction work in central Turkey, according to a provincial official on Tuesday.

Municipality workers in Corum province found the sarcophagus located around 70 centimeters (27 inches) deep from the surface, and informed the Corum Museum about the finding.


Visiting the scene together with police teams, museum experts examined the area and transferred the sarcophagus to the museum after a rescue excavation.

The sarcophagus also included pieces of glass and a perfume bottle made of terracotta, along with the skeleton which was sent to the Anthropology Department of Hitit University in Corum for examination.


Provincial Head of Culture and Tourism Office Sumeyra Sengul told reporters that the 2.72-meter  long sarcophagus belongs to the Roman era.

"When we opened the cover of the sarcophagus we saw a female skeleton. It is estimated that it belonged to an old woman," Sengul said, adding that there were also pieces of glass and a scent bottle.


"These remind us of burial gifts of the Roman era," she said and noted that such sarcophagus is rare in the region as it is made of local materials and possibly was made by "local stone masters".

The farmer, who lives in the Koçubaba village in Balışeyh district discovered the jar after his tractor got locked on the jar. He immediately called the gendarmerie to inform officials about the find.

The jar, which was allegedly used to store food supply, was brought to the Kırıkkale Culture and Tourism Directorate after archaeologists extracted it.

"It was used as a cellar in the Byzantine era," Kırıkkale Culture and Tourism Director Aydın Demiröz told Anadolu Agency, adding that it will be exhibited in the directorate headquarters.

Genetic analysis of sacred ibis mummies sheds light on early Egyptian practices


New genetic research into the mummification of ibises found in Egyptian catacombs has shed light on how Ancient Egyptians obtained millions of the ‘wise’ birds to sacrifice annually.

The research, led by Griffith University, investigated historical suggestions that Sacred Ibis were farmed on an industrial scale in order to provide the God of Wisdom Thoth with millions of sacrificed birds each year.

Mitogenomic analyses by the team revealed high genetic diversity among the mummified ibises from various sites. This suggests that mass-scale farming was unlikely and instead supported the possibility that temple priests and locals were able to tame and increase wild populations each year.

Researchers from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa Denmark and Egypt contributed to the study, which has been published in PLOS ONE.

Dr Sally Wasef and Professor David Lambert from Griffith’s Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution analysed the mitogenomes (DNA transmitted from the mother only to offspring) of 26 modern Sacred Ibis samples collected from throughout Africa. 


In addition, 14 ancient Egyptian from five major Sacred Ibis burial sites scattered around Egypt were examined genetically.

Radiocarbon dating revealed that most of the ancient Egyptian ibis mummy samples were aged to ~600BC.

About 15,000 birds were estimated to be mummified and offered annually at each temple site, of which there were many throughout Egypt.  Hence, the yearly total of sacrificed birds was likely in the millions.

The ibises were mummified and placed in clay jars by temple priests then offered to Thoth who had the appearance of a man but the head of an ibis. The mummies were stacked floor-to-ceiling in many rooms lining the catacomb streets.

Dr Wasef said contrary to historical belief that the millions of the birds were industrially farmed for yearly sacrifice, analysis of the mitogenomes of the mummified birds from the various sites showed a high genetic diversity among them.

“This suggests it is unlikely that Sacred Ibis were farmed on a mass scale as the genetic consequences of that would have been low genetic diversity owing to the shared DNA between in-breeding family groups over time,” she said.

“If the ancient Egyptians had bred the Ibis in local homes or wetlands surrounding the temples, it would have been just a short-term practice to support the considerable yearly demand. It seems clear that they did not establish long-term industrial scale farms to have millions of birds to sacrifice each year. We suggest that the genetic data indicates that the local people obtained wild ibis yearly, tamed them and raised them for mummification, so it was also beneficial for the community and the economy.”


Dr Wasef adds that had there been an industrial-scale farming operation, the expedition team would not have found ‘fake’ mummies (mummified feathers and nests) in the temple catacombs as there would have been plenty of ibises to sacrifice and offer.

Professor Lambert remarked: “mitogenomic analyses outlined here are appropriate in this case because the timeframe under study was short, being only 2000-3000 years.”

Thoth was the god of wisdom, magic, writing, and the moon. His head was shaped like that of an ibis. The ancient Egyptians believed the Sacred Ibis – very similar species to Australia’s white ibis – was very wise in drinking only clean water.

“Here in Australia we call the ibis a ‘bin chicken’, but if you did the same in ancient Egypt you would be put to death,” Dr Wasef said.

“To ancient Egyptians the Sacred Ibis was a God, something to be revered and worshiped. So this research hopefully might result in our humble ‘bin chicken’ being seen in a new light.”

Scientists explore Egyptian mummy bones with x-rays and infrared light


Experiments at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) are casting a new light on Egyptian soil and ancient mummified bone samples that could provide a richer understanding of daily life and environmental conditions thousands of years ago.

In a two-monthslong research effort that concluded in late August, two researchers from Cairo University in Egypt brought 32 bone samples and two soil samples to study using X-ray and infrared light-based techniques at Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS produces various wavelengths of bright light that can be used to explore the microscopic chemistry, structure, and other properties of samples.

Their visit was made possible by LAAAMP - the Lightsources for Africa, the Americas, Asia and Middle East Project - a grant-supported program that is intended to foster greater international scientific opportunity and collaboration for scientists working in that region of the globe.

Samples represent four dynasties, two burial sites

The samples included bone fragments of mummified human remains that date back 2,000 to 4,000 years, and soil collected from the sites of the human remains. The remains represent four different dynasties in Egypt: the Middle Kingdom, Second Intermediate Period, Late Period, and Greco-Roman.

The visiting scientists, Cairo University Associate Professor Ahmed Elnewishy and postdoctoral researcher Mohamed Kasem, wanted to distinguish whether chemical concentrations in the bone samples were related to the individuals' health, diet, and daily lives, or whether the chemicals in the soil had changed the bones' chemistry over time.


Their work is important for Egypt's cultural heritage and also for a better understanding of antiquities preservation and the potential pathways for contamination of these remains. The samples were recovered from two Egyptian sites - Saqqara, the site of an ancient burial ground; and Aswan, the site of an ancient city on the bank of the Nile once known as Swenett - by Cairo University archaeologists.

"The bones are acting like an archive," said Kasem, who has studied ancient bone chemistry since his Ph.D. studies, dating back to 2011. He has used a chemical-analysis technique involving laser ablation, in which a short laser pulse blasts away a small volume of material from a sample. Then, emitted light from this little blast is analyzed to determine what elements are present.

"We have found lead, aluminum, and other elements that give us an indication of the environment and the toxicity of that time," he said. "That information is stored right in the bones."

Differentiating soil vs. bone chemistry

What's tricky is to sort out how the elements got in the bone. "There might be some diffusion of elements from outside to inside the bones, and effects from bacteria, humidity, and other effects. It is difficult to separate this - to know if it is coming from the surrounding soil. So we've been trying different techniques."

Kasem added, "So many factors affect the preservation. One of them is how long the bone has been buried in soil and also the state of the bone and the different types of soil." Differences in embalming techniques could also affect the preservation of the bone and the chemistry they find in the X-ray studies. "There are different qualities in the materials, like the cloth and the resins they used to embalm," he said.

While the ancient Egyptians didn't use aluminum in metal-working, researchers have found that they used potassium alum, a chemical compound containing aluminum, to reduce cloudiness in drinking water. And the concentrations of lead were likely due to the lead that Egyptians used to polish pottery.


The latest studies are focused on samples including slices from the head of femur bones and from the femur shafts to see whether one sample type may be more prone to contamination from surrounding soil than the other type, for example. Femur bones are the strongest bones in the human body and run from the knees to the hips. The head, at the top of the femur, has spongier bone material than the core of the shaft.

The researchers worked with ALS research scientists Hans Bechtel and Eric Schaible to carry out experiments at three different beamlines. Schaible assisted the researchers with a technique known as small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), which they used to analyze the nanoscale patterning of collagen, an abundant human protein.

X-ray scans reveal collagen patterns

A single scan of the bone cross-sections, which measured up to 3 to 5 centimeters across and about half a millimeter in thickness, took two to six hours to complete and provided a detailed 2D map showing how the collagen was organized within the bone.

These images can be compared with modern bones to better understand whether and how the collagen degraded over time, and can possibly tell us about an individual's health.


"Collagen is one of the main building blocks of the body," Schaible said. "It's found in skin, bones, internal organs, eyes, ears, blood vessels - it's one of the main things we're made of.  When we shine X-rays through the collagen, the X-rays are scattered and the pattern of scattering that they make can tell us a lot about how well-preserved and well-organized the collagen is."

Though there is much analysis ahead to interpret the data taken from the samples, Schaible said that the collagen assemblies generally aren't as well ordered in the ancient samples as in healthy modern bones.

"It's very exciting to be involved in this project, and to learn about the journey these mummies have been on, in life and after death," he said.

Infrared light shows bone chemistry, mineral concentrations

The infrared studies at the ALS show the chemical distribution and concentration of the minerals and organic materials present in the bones.


"One of the main obstacles was in how to prepare the samples," said Elnewishy. It is difficult to cut thin cross-sections from such delicate material.

Schaible contacted a specialized lab at UC Berkeley's Earth and Planetary Science Department, which aided in slicing the samples. For the thinnest sections and the most fragile samples, the bone was suspended in epoxy resin and then sliced.

Plans for new experiments

Elnewishy said there are plans to also conduct related experiments at SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East), a scientific light source in Jordan that opened up to experiments in 2017. SESAME was built through a cooperative venture by scientists and governments in the region.

He noted that what the team learns about cultural heritage and preservation of samples through its experiments could potentially benefit the collections of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, which is expected to open in 2020 and will host more than 100,000 Egyptian artifacts.

Egypt says it's unearthed large animal mummy, likely a lion

The ministry said on Monday the mummy was excavated in Saqqara, a town south of Cairo that was a vast necropolis in antiquity and is home to the famed Step Pyramid.


Archaeologists frequently find mummified cats but the recovery of a lion is rare. In 2004, the first lion skeleton was found, revealing the sacred status of the animal during ancient times.

The ministry says it will expand on the discovery at a press conference after running radar scans.

Egypt has stepped up promotion of its archaeological treasures in hopes of reviving a tourism sector slow to recover from the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

New structure found in Metropolis excavations


Excavations in the ancient Greek city of Metropolis in İzmir’s Torbalı district, carried out with the support of the Sabancı Foundation, continue to shed light on the secrets of history.

Headed by Manisa Celal Bayar University Archaeology Professor Serdar Aybek, the works have been carried out with the participation of experts from Turkish and foreign universities. The team discovered an unknown structure this year.

The newly discovered structure provided access to important information about ancient architecture and engineering. Built on an area of approximately 400 square metres, the building bears the traces of a glorious life in Metropolis during the last years of the Roman Empire.


The building is well preserved and demonstrates that the craftsmen living in the city had advanced knowledge of architecture and engineering.

Geometric decorated mosaics unearthed under the marble slabs of the large courtyard, where the entrance is, reveal that the building was built on another structure damaged by a devastating earthquake.

In the newly discovered building, unlike the two large bath complexes in Metropolis, a small private bath called the “Balneum” was discovered.

With its small spaces and capacity to serve only one family, the Metropolis Balneum, built sometimes in the fourth to fifth centuries, is presumed to be the property of a wealthy Metropolis resident or a ruler living in Metropolis.


Next to the marble courtyard of the Balneum there is a pool for up to three to four people. From this pool, there is access to the front room with another pool covered with colored marbles. This room provides access to a warm room through a narrow door. This leads to the warmest room of the Balneum, the central bathing section, with two or three bathtubs. This room is thought to be a sweating room comparable to today’s saunas.

The excavation team identified a unique engineering wonder system that showed that the space was heated from the floor and wall about 1,500 years ago.

“The advanced heating system we discovered in the Balneum reveals important clues about the life of the city and its people at that time," Aybek said. "The private bath structure, which we believe belonged to one of the notables of the city, shows that they had a heating system that we can consider very advanced even today and that an engineering study was carried out to ensure that clean and dirty water passes without contact with each other.”

Roman-era catacomb unearthed in Egypt


The Ministry of Antiquities announced on the discovery of an ancient cemetery in Saqqara. It is the first discovered cemetery from the Roman era in this region.

During the last excavation season, a joint Egyptian-Japanese archaeological mission in North Saqqara headed by Nozomu Kawai of Kanazawa University and Waseda University in Japan succeeded in uncovering a Roman catacomb tomb, spanning back to the first and second centuries AD.

Saqqara's General Manager Sabry Farah said the mission found the catacombs in the area northeast the old Saqqara region, where no excavation work has been carried out before.

For his part, Kawai said the discovered catacombs consisted of a domed mud brick building with an internal staircase and a rock carved room made of limestone, where a rock-engraved plaque with a round plate was found containing images of Sokar, Thoth and Anubis from left to right and two lines of Greek inscriptions below the relief.

Five terra-cotta statues of Isis-Aphrodite were also found, in addition to a number of clay pots found by the entrance gate.

He added that the mission also found two statues of lions made of limestone. Each statue is about 55 cm in length.

Farah indicated that the mission had found the rock-carved room outside the entrance gate. The room consists of a long hall of about 15 metres in length and about 2 metres in width, with a number of small chambers carved on the sidewalls. Inside the carved chambers a large clay statue of Isis-Aphrodite was discovered in addition to a number of mummies.

Who exactly were the Aurignacians, who lived in the Levant 40,000 years ago? Researchers from Tel Aviv University, the Israel Antiquities Authority, and Ben-Gurion University now report that these culturally sophisticated yet mysterious humans migrated from Europe to the Levant some 40,000 years ago, shedding light on a significant era in the region's history.

The Aurignacian culture first appeared in Europe some 43,000 years ago and is known for having produced bone tools, artifacts, jewelry, musical instruments, and cave paintings. For years, researchers believed that modern man's entry into Europe led to the rapid decline of the Neanderthals, either through violent confrontation or wresting control of food sources. But recent genetic studies have shown that Neanderthals did not vanish. Instead, they assimilated into modern human immigrant populations. The new study adds further evidence to substantiate this theory.


Through cutting-edge dental research on six human teeth discovered at Manot Cave in the Western Galilee, Dr. Rachel Sarig of TAU's School of Dental Medicine and Dan David Center Center for Human Evolution and Biohistory Research, Sackler Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with Dr. Omry Barzilai of the Israel Antiquities Authority and colleagues in Austria and the United States, have demonstrated that Aurignacians arrived in modern-day Israel from Europe some 40,000 years ago -- and that these Aurignacians comprised Neanderthals and Homo sapiens alike.

"Unlike bones, teeth are preserved well because they're made of enamel, the substance in the human body most resistant to the effects of time," Dr. Sarig explains. "The structure, shape, and topography or surface bumps of the teeth provided important genetic information. We were able to use the external and internal shape of the teeth found in the cave to associate them with typical hominin groups: Neanderthal and Homo sapiens."


The researchers performed in-depth lab tests using micro-CT scans and 3D analyses on four of the teeth. The results surprised the researchers: Two teeth showed a typical morphology for Homo sapiens; one tooth showed features characteristic of Neanderthals; the last tooth showed a combination of Neanderthal and Homo sapiens features.

This combination of Neanderthal and modern human features has, to date, been found only in European populations from the early Paleolithic period, suggesting their common origin.

"Following the migration of European populations into this region, a new culture existed in the Levant for a short time, approximately 2,000-3,000 years. It then disappeared for no apparent reason," adds Dr. Sarig. "Now we know something about their makeup."

"Until now, we hadn't found any human remains with valid dating from this period in Israel," adds Prof. Israel Hershkovitz, head of the Dan David Center, "so the group remains a mystery. This groundbreaking study contributes to the story of the population responsible for some of the world's most important cultural contributions."

A report on the new findings was published in the Journal of Human Evolution.

3,000-year-old Egyptian wheat genome sequenced for first time


The genome of an ancient Egyptian wheat has been sequenced for the first time by a UCL-led team, revealing historical patterns of crop movement and domestication.

The study, published in Nature Plants, was carried out by an international research team, which mapped the genetic code from a sample of wheat harvested over 3,000 years ago, that was excavated in 1924 from the Hememiah North Spur site in Egypt.

The sample, which is currently on display in the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology at UCL having been stored there for 90 years, showcases the scientific potential of museum specimens.

Alongside colleagues from the Natural History Museum and the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics, Barcelona, the researchers showed the wheat already had most of the genetic characteristics associated with domestication. For example, the wheat had genetic mutations to make it non-shattering, meaning it retained its seeds, making harvest easier but hindering natural dispersal.

The DNA comes from emmer wheat, one of the first cereals domesticated in the old world. The Romans called it ‘Pharaoh’s wheat’, owing to the fact that it was the most common type of wheat in ancient Egypt.


Most wheat grown today is bread wheat, which is the result of a hybridisation between emmer wheat and a wild grass. To further complicate matters, emmer wheat is itself the result of an older hybridisation in the wild.

“These wheats have genetic material derived from multiple species. Given this complexity, and how DNA degrades over time, it’s amazing that we are now able to look at ancient wheat genomes,” said the study’s lead author Dr Michael Scott (UCL Genetics Institute), who also managed to bake his own bread using modern emmer wheat.

“I wanted to taste emmer wheat; to my surprise, emmer flour was available locally and I made a sourdough. I think that the gluten was weak, the loaf rose less than usual but it had a pleasantly nutty taste.”

The team found that the ancient Egyptian specimen is distinct from modern wheats, but most closely related to modern emmer wheats that are grown in India, Oman, and Turkey.


“This genetically connects emmer grown in Egypt with the earlier eastwards expansion of emmer cultivation, which originated in the Fertile Crescent region of the Near East,” said co-author Professor Dorian Fuller (UCL Institute of Archaeology).

The study also found signatures of pre-historic human activity in the ancient wheat genome.

“Wild emmer wheat seeds are released from the plant where they can’t be easily harvested. Under cultivation, deliberately or co-incidentally, farmers bred emmer wheats that retain their seeds. This specimen was domesticated, likely over 8,300 years ago based on archaeobotanical data, and would have retained its seeds,” explained Professor Fuller.

The researchers note that the specimen was stored for over 90 years without any climate control.


“Importantly, material excavated over 90 years ago and since then stored without climate control can yield usable DNA, which accentuates the great potential of museum specimens for genetic analysis,” said senior author Professor Richard Mott (UCL Genetics Institute).

Petrie Museum curator Dr Anna Garnett, added: “This study shows that our collection is a dynamic and living resource. Genetic data allows us to look at these specimens from an angle that couldn’t have been imagined when they were first added to the collection.”

The researchers found evidence of gene flow between the cultivated wheat and wild populations, resulting in a genetically distinctive crop, which may still have agricultural uses.

Co-author Professor Mark Thomas (UCL Genetics Institute) said: “Crop breeders are interested in genetic variation, as some of it may be useful. For example, it may enable us to breed crops that are better suited to future climates. Targeted reintroduction of genetic variation that was used in the past adds a new dimension to crop breeding.”

11,300-year-old temple unearthed in southeastern Turkey


An ancient temple with four stelae estimated to be over 11,000 years old has been unearthed in Mardin, southeastern Turkey.

Ergul Kodas, an archaeologist at Artuklu University and advisor to the excavation area, told Anadolu Agency that the temple, built with small stones and hardened clay floors, belongs to the same period as Gobeklitepe, the famed “oldest temple in the world.”

“According to analysis, the temple has four steles. We think it's about 11,300 years old,” said Kodas. “Excavations are underway, but we have clearly revealed the steles. One of the four steles we uncovered was broken, but the other three were still preserved to this day as they were,” he added.
