A Roman burial containing a male skeleton was found near the seaside resort of Baia Domizia in the municipality of Cellole, Campania, southern Italy.

The burial, thought to date to the third century BC, has led to speculation that a Roman necropolis may be located in the immediate vicinity.


Indeed, in the past local farmers have found coins, pottery, swords and various farm tools in the area.

During the recent installation of a water pipe, the remains of a Roman villa was also discovered nearby.

The area was evidently frequented in Roman times by senators and patricians who built their retirement villas there, until the slow decline in the last years of the Empire, when Baia Domizia and the adjacent areas were raided by the Vandals (summer of 458 AD).
