Archaeologists in Almuñecar on Spain's south coast have found human remains in a wall. The discovery was made while digging a trench to improve electricity service in the town on Calle Puerta de Granada.

Archaeologists Julia Garcia Gonzalez and Sara Perez Lopez found the remains next to the parish church of the Encarnacion de Almuñecar.

Municipal archaeologist Elena Navas said: “Given that the works take place in such an important historic area in Almuñecar as the Puerta de Granada… they required an archaeological follow-up.”

She added: “As a result of these works they found various remains of walls and several graves.” Experts believe the remains are characteristic of a Muslim burial ritual, with the bodies positioned with the heads facing towards Mecca.

Navas said she believes the bodies have been there for several hundred years, since, “the foundation of the church directly affects some of these graves, indicating that they are prior to the construction of the church, whose building works ended in 1600.”
