Human migration out of Africa may have followed monsoons in the Middle East


Last year, scientists announced that a human jawbone and prehistoric tools found in 2002 in Misliya Cave, on the western edge of Israel, were between 177,000 and 194,000 years old.

The finding suggested that modern humans, who originated in Africa, began migrating out of the continent at least 40,000 years earlier than scientists previously thought.

But the story of how and when modern humans originated and spread throughout the world is still in draft form. That's because science hasn't settled how many times modern humans left Africa, or just how many routes they may have taken.

A new study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by American and Israeli geoscientists and climatologists provides evidence that summer monsoons from Asia and Africa may have reached into the Middle East for periods of time going back at least 125,000 years, providing suitable corridors for human migration.

The likely timing of these northward monsoon expansions corresponds with cyclical changes in Earth's orbit that would have brought the Northern Hemisphere closer to the sun and led to increased summer precipitation. With increased summer precipitation there may have been increased vegetation, supporting animal and human migration into the region.

"It could be important context for experts studying how, why, and when early modern humans were migrating out of Africa," says lead author Ian Orland, a University of Wisconsin-Madison geoscientist now at the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, in the Division of Extension. "The Eastern Mediterranean was a critical bottleneck for that route out of Africa and if our suggestion is right, at 125,000 years ago and potentially at other periods, there may have been more consistent rainfall on a year-round basis that might enhance the ability of humans to migrate."


For as long as humans have kept records, winters have been wet and summers have been hot and dry in the Levant, a region that includes Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. Before modern times, those hot, dry summers would have presented a significant barrier to people trying to move across the landscape.

Scientists, though, have found it difficult to determine what kinds of precipitation patterns might have existed in the prehistoric Levant. Some studies examining a variety of evidence, including pollen records, ancient lake beds, and Dead Sea sediments, along with some climate modeling studies, indicate summers in the region may have, on occasion, been wet.

To try to better understand this seasonality, Orland and colleagues looked at cave formations called speleothems in Israel's Soreq Cave. Speleothems, such as stalactites and stalagmites, form when water drips into a cave and deposits a hard mineral called calcite. The water contains chemical fingerprints called isotopes that keep a record, like an archive, of the timing and environmental conditions under which speleothems have grown.

Among these isotopes are different forms of oxygen molecules -- a light form called O16 and a heavy form called O18. Today, the water contributing to speleothem growth throughout much of the year has both heavy and light oxygen, with the light oxygen predominantly delivered by rainstorms during the winter wet season.

Orland and his colleagues hypothesized they might be able to discern from speleothems whether two rainy seasons had contributed to their growth at times in the past because they might show a similar signature of light oxygen in both winter and summer growth.

But to make this comparison, the scientists had to make isotope measurements across single growth bands, which are narrower than a human hair. Using a sensitive instrument in the UW-Madison Department of Geoscience called an ion microprobe, the team measured the relative amounts of light and heavy oxygen at seasonal increments across the growth bands of two 125,000-year-old speleothems from Soreq Cave.


This was the first time that seasonal changes were directly measured in a speleothem this old.

At the same time that Orland was in pursuit of geologic answers, his UW-Madison colleague in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies Center for Climatic Research, Feng He, was independently using climate models to examine how vegetation on the planet has changed with seasonal fluctuations over the last 800,000 years. Colleagues since graduate school, He and Orland teamed up to combine their respective approaches after learning their studies were complementary.

A previous study in 2014 from UW-Madison climatologist and Professor Emeritus John Kutzbach showed that the Middle East may have been warmer and wetter than usual during two periods of time corresponding roughly to 125,000 years ago and 105,000 years ago. Meanwhile, at a point in between, 115,000 years ago, conditions there were more similar to today.

The wetter time periods corresponded to peak summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere, when Earth passes closer to the sun due to subtle changes in its orbit. The drier time period corresponded to one of its farthest orbits from the sun. Monsoon seasons tend to be stronger during peak insolation.

This provided He an opportunity to study high and low insolation rainfall during summer seasons in the Middle East and to study its isotopic signatures.

The climate model "fueled the summer monsoon hypothesis" because it suggested that "under these conditions, the monsoons could have reached the Middle East and would have a low O18 signature," He, a study co-author, says. "It's a very intriguing period in terms of climate and human evolution."


His model showed that northward expansion of the African and Asian summer monsoons was possible during this time period, would have brought significant rainfall to the Levant in the summer months, would have nearly doubled annual precipitation in the region, and would have left an oxygen isotope signature similar to winter rains.

At the same time, Orland's speleothem isotype analysis also suggested summers were rainier during peak insolation at 125,000 and 105,000 years ago.

For similar reasons, the Middle East may have also been warm and humid around 176,000 years ago, the researchers say -- about when the jawbone made its way to Misliya Cave. And before the jawbone, the previous oldest modern human fossils found outside of Africa were at Israel's Skh?l Cave, dating back between 80,000 and 120,000 years ago.

Overall, the study suggests that during a period of time when humans and their ancestors were exploring beyond the African continent, conditions may have been favorable for them to traverse the Levant.

"Human migration out of Africa occurred in pulses, which is definitely consistent with our idea that every time the Earth is closer to the sun, the summer monsoon is stronger and that's the climatic window that opened and provided opportunities for human migration out of Africa," says He.

Photos of looted mosaics help pinpoint foundation date of Hellenistic city in Syria


One of the largest Hellenistic cities, Apamea, whose ruins are located in modern day Syria, was founded in the autumn of 320 BC, determined Prof. Marek T. Olszewski from the University of Warsaw. Until now, researchers only theorised when it had happened.

The dating was possible thanks to the analysis of the photographs of the floor mosaic, which was discovered and stolen by looters in 2011. The only known photographs of the mosaic were taken by thieves at the time of the theft. The robbers separated it from the ground and sold to antique collectors through international traders. Interpol is currently searching for the mosaic.

"Thanks to many months of historical studies and the analysis of the work visible in several photographs, we managed to spot the scene of the foundation of Apamea. Over 30 figures are visible in the photographs of the mosaic, including historical ones such as generals of Alexander the Great, which is unique", says the research project leader Prof. Marek T. Olszewski from the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw, who made the important observation together with Dr. Houmam Saad.

Initially it was thought that Apamea had been founded by the famous ancient ruler Alexander of Macedon, ca. 330 BC. Recently, scientists favoured the concept that this Macedonian colony was founded in 307-304 BC by Antigonus I Monophthalmus (Antigonus the One-eyed), one of Alexander the Great`s generals. In the light of the latest discovery, that theory also turned out to be incorrect.


"One of the scenes on the mosaic shows the foundation of this city in 320 BC, probably in the autumn, by Antipater (regent of the empire) and his son Cassander, commander of the Macedonian cavalry", says Prof. Olszewski. In the researcher`s opinion, this is "an extremely important discovery for Hellenistic history in the Middle East", the more so that this issue is often discussed in professional literature.

According to the researchers, the stolen mosaic is about 19 square meters and consists of three stripes with visible figural imagery.

According to the analysis of the scenes visible on the mosaic, the city was initially a Macedonian military colony (320 BC) named Pella. Later, ca. 300 BC, as a result of a "re-fundation act" it received the status of a city, which was named Apamea in honour of the first wife of Hellenistic King Seleucus I Nicator.

The researcher adds that the mosaic also shows queen Apama herself. "This is the first and only portrait of the queen from ancient times known to scholars", the historian emphasises. She is presented in a sitting pose, in front of a large table with a pile of gold and silver coins to be used to build a part of the new city.

According to Olszewski, the mosaic was partly inspired by paintings of the Hellenistic era or unknown texts from the era. It was probably made in the fourth century

"This mosaic is one of the few history-themed mosaics created in the Greek-Roman antiquity. It is a work of exceptional importance for the reconstruction of the history of Apamea and the Diadochi, commanders of the army of Alexander the Great, who took power after his death", the researcher believes.


The ruins of the ancient city of Apamea (today Qalaat al-Madiq) are located on the eastern bank of the Orontes River, 55 kilometres northwest of the city of Hama. After Antioch, Apamea was the second largest city of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine East.

Apamea was the main military centre of the Seleucids (the dynasty that ruled after the death of Alexander the Great), and after their fall in 63 BC. the city became part of the Roman province of Syria. At that time, together with the neighbouring towns, it had nearly 500,000 residents. In the fourth century AD, Apamea became the capital of the Roman province of Syria Secunda, in the seventh century it was destroyed by the Persians and then rebuilt.

In the 12th century, the city was abandoned after the devastating earthquake in 1152.

In recent decades, archaeologists carried out excavations in this ancient city. In 2011, as a result of the civil war in Syria, the ancient city was destroyed and looted. Until now, researchers have not resumed field research in Apamea.

Damascus citadel restoration in progress, UNESCO to decide fate of Syrian heritage sites


In the Middle Ages, the Syrian city of Damascus was the nerve centre of a thriving craft industry, specializing in swords and lace.

But since civil war broke out in 2011 the country has been left picking up the pieces. Today, archaeological digs have restarted and new excavations are underway in the Damascus Citadel, located in the northwest corner of Old Damascus.

The citadel consists of 12 towers, with three main gates. The towers contain several layers — a testimony to the various rulers and kings who made modifications to fortify the structures.


The archaeological drive on the citadel is focused on uncovering the Emirate's house — the historic home of the ruler of Damascus and other areas in the Levante.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is meeting in Azerbaijan from June 30 to July 10 to examine 36 nominations for inscription on the list of World Heritage sites. It will also decide which sites are "in danger".

Over the years, the citadel has seen its share of misfortune. It was hit by several earthquakes and started to fall into disrepair in the 19th century, used as a military barracks and prison until 1984.

Edmond Aji, head of the Damascus citadel enhancement project, said: "The excavations and archaeological research in the Citadel of Damascus are focused on these periods to study the mechanisms of the emirate, where only very rare ruins and few buildings are left."

Aji is convinced that the site has not yet revealed all its secrets to archaeologists. "There will be a lot of surprises and important archaeological discoveries in the near future," he said.

After the war erupted, tourists stopped visiting. Aji hopes that the new discoveries will attract visitors.


"Listing the citadel site on the international heritage list attracts tourists, scientists and researchers," he said.

"We hope to preserve it now, In the past many destructions took place and I hope it returns to the state in which it used to be," said visitor Yara Bara.

The ancient city of Damascus

For centuries, the citadel of Damascus stood guard over the Syrian city. Several generations of kings of sultans made military fortifications.


The city grew around its ramparts, which were fortified by several generations of kings and sultans. It had for its neighbour the historic Al-Hamidiyeh souq (market).


UNESCO's heritage committee took note of its significance and declared the ancient city of Damascus a world heritage site in 1979, placing it alongside five other monuments in one of the oldest cities on Earth: The site of Palmyra; Ancient City of Bosra; Ancient City of Aleppo; Crac des Chevaliers and Qal’at Salah El-Din; the ancient villages of Northern Syria.

More than three decades later, a civil war broke out in Syria, damaging or destroying all of these heritage sites. UNESCO put them on the "in danger" list in 2013, intending to mobilize support for safeguarding them. These properties are recognised by the international community as being of "outstanding universal value for humanity as a whole," according to UNESCO.

A Damascus museum on Tuesday unveiled a replica, built by Italian archaeologists, of part of a temple altar destroyed by Islamic State militants in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.

The 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel at Palmyra was one of the jewels in Syria’s lavish trove of historical monuments, spanning myriad civilizations, before the country’s conflict began in 2011.


Islamic State seized Palmyra in May 2015 and demolished many of its ancient structures and objects, while looting others to help finance its operations.

The temple’s ornate stone altar structure was destroyed in October 2015, but an Italian team has rebuilt its ceiling using 3D imaging and skilled stonework.


“It is identical to the original piece with all its details and decorations because the 3D technique is very developed,” said Mamoun Abdul Karim, the former head of the Syrian government’s antiquities department. “But it is no substitute for the original object,” he added.

The new altar is 4 meters long and built with a combination of plastic and polished stone, said Frances Pinnock of the Sapienza University of Rome, head of the scientific team that worked on the building process.


She said they had proposed building a replica as an emotional response to the destruction of the ceiling, but also to see if it was scientifically possible to construct what was lost.


Abdul Karim called on the international community to make the same effort to restore Syria’s Palmyra as it is making for Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, damaged in a fire last week.

“It is an international responsibility,” he said.

Mesopotamian King Sargon II envisioned ancient city Karkemish as western Assyrian capital


In a new study published in the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, Gianni Marchesi translates a recently discovered inscription of the Assyrian King Sargon II found at the ruins of the ancient city of Karkemish. The inscription, which dates to around 713 B.C., details Sargon's conquest, occupation, and reorganization of Karkemish, including his rebuilding the city with ritual ceremonies usually reserved for royal palaces in capital cities. The text implies that Sargon may have been planning to make Karkemish a western capital of Assyria, from which he could administer and control his empire's western territories.

The cuneiform inscription was found on fragments from three different clay cylinders in 2015 as part of the Nicolò Marchetti-led Turco-Italian Archaeological Expedition at Karkemish. Now in ruins, the site is located on the Euphrates river on the border between present day Syria and Turkey.

Marchesi analyzed and translated the total of thirty-eight lines of partially broken Akkadian text, using reference material, academic literature and other inscribed Assyrian artifacts as reference points for filling in the gaps. The lines of text ranged from two-thirds complete to much less, and no line of text was completely intact.

"Even so, we can grasp much of the original text, which turns out to be very informative," Marchesi writes. "In fact, unlike other Sargon cylinders, which contain relatively standard 'summary' inscriptions or annalistic accounts of the events of Sargon's reign, the Karkemish Cylinder provides us with a completely new inscription, dealing almost exclusively with the newly conquered city on the Euphrates in a highly-elaborated, literary style."


In the inscription, Sargon tells of the "betrayal" of Pirisi, the Hittite King of Karkemish who exchanged hostile words about Assyria with its enemy, King Midas of Phrygia. Sargon invades Karkemish, deports Pisiri and his supporters, destroys his palace, seizes his riches as booty and incorporates Pisiri's army into his own. He resettles the city with Assyrians. Having previously blocked the water supply to Karkemish, the meadows "let go fallow, like a wasteland," Marchesi translates, he now reactivates the irrigation system, planting orchards and botanical gardens. "I made the scent of the city sweeter than the scent of a cedar forest."

He also details an inauguration ceremony where he received gifts from Assyrian provinces and sacrifices them to deities. "My lords the gods Karhuha and Kubaba, who dwell in Karkemish, I invited them into my palace," Marchesi translates. "Strong rams of the stable, geese, ducks and flying birds of the sky I offered before them."

Marchesi was struck by the attention that Sargon paid to Karkemish, in particular the elaborate inauguration ceremony and construction of botanical gardens, both indicative not of a typical provincial capital but of a royal palace.


"Because of its glorious past and strategic position, Karkemish was fully entitled to become a sort of western capital of the Assyrian Empire: a perfect place in which to display the grandeur of Assyria, and from which to control the western and north-western territories of the empire," Marchesi writes.

This vision of Karkemish was short-lived, however. Though much care was taken to detail the city's rise in these texts, the city is not mentioned in any known inscriptions of Sargon's successors.

"The unthinkable, ominous death of Sargon on the battlefield in Tabal probably prevented this project from being accomplished, and negatively marked the destiny of Karkemish itself, which no longer attracted the interest of Assyrian kings who followed after him," Marchesi writes.

Declassified U2 spy plane images reveal bygone Middle Eastern archaeological features


In the 1950s and early '60s, with the Cold War at its peak, the United States flew U2 spy planes across Europe, the Middle East, and central eastern Asia, taking images of interesting military targets. Though the missions typically connected Point A to Point B, say an air field and an important city, in many cases the camera kept recording between those spots, capturing thousands of photos of the desert, steppes, fields, and villages below.

Such a collection can represent a goldmine for landscape archaeologists like Emily Hammer of the University of Pennsylvania and Jason Ur of Harvard University. But for decades, all film and documents from these missions--code-named CHESS by the U.S. government--remained classified. And even when they became public in 1997, they weren't indexed or scanned.

Until now, the majority of this kind of historical aerial documentation came from the CORONA spy satellite program, which the U.S. ran between 1959 and 1972. But only the highest-resolution CORONA images, taken during the program's final five years, are useful for most archaeological purposes. The U2 photos are earlier and a higher resolution than even the best CORONA images, offering the chance to see historical features undecipherable by CORONA or already gone by the time of those missions.


Knowing the potential insight offered by the U2 images, Hammer and Ur began sifting through the materials. By analyzing thousands of high- and low-resolution frames, they discovered many historical and archaeological features, including prehistoric hunting traps, 3,000-year-old irrigation canals, and 60-year-old marsh villages no longer visible today. The work, which they published in the journal Advances in Archaeological Practice, represents the first archaeological use of U2 spy plane imagery--and a new and exciting window into history.

"The photos provide a fascinating look at the Middle East several decades ago, showing, for example, historical Aleppo long before the massive destruction wrought in the ongoing civil war," says Hammer, an assistant professor in Penn's Near Eastern languages and civilizations department. "Plus, the work and the accompanying online resources will allow other researchers to identify and access U2 photos for the first time."

Hammer and Ur have both conducted research in the Middle East for decades, in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. They've also both used CORONA spy satellite imagery extensively. However, many of those image sets didn't date back as far as Hammer wished they would. "We knew that U2 spy planes must have taken thousands of images across large parts of the Middle East, but there was no easy way to access or reproduce the film negatives," she says.

A chance encounter with Lin Xu, a researcher who had retrieved U2 images of his hometown in China, led Hammer and Ur to press on. "Seeing the amazing quality of those archival photos," Hammer says, "we knew that it would be worth the detective work it would take to build a systematic index of them."

It wasn't an easy process. Ahead of time, they had to select the film rolls they wanted moved from the National Archives' storage center in Kansas to the aerial film section in Maryland. Once there, the researchers unspooled hundreds of feet of film over a light table to identify pertinent frames, then photographed the negatives in pieces using a 100-millimeter macro lens. Later, they stitched together and adjusted each frame, before geo-referencing the photos using GIS software to match up images with coordinates of real-world places.


Despite the tedium of some of the individual tasks, the process excited Hammer. "As you turn the spool of a film roll following the path of the U2 plane, you may not know exactly what you'll see in unfamiliar places, so there's often a sense of exploration and discovery," she says. "Other times, the pilots were flying over regions I knew by heart from travel and study, and I would almost hold my breath, hoping that the plane had veered just a little to the right or left."

The hours of work paid off, revealing many important archaeological features, including prehistoric hunting traps called desert kites in eastern Jordan, an Assyrian canal system in northern Iraq, and marshes in southern Iraq, case studies the researchers highlighted in their paper.

Desert kites, stone-wall structures that date back 5,000 to 8,000 years, were used to trap gazelle and other similar animals. The dry desert of eastern Jordan preserved many of them, but agricultural expansion in western Jordan dismantled or destroyed many more. The satellite images bring them back to life, showcasing a web of diamond-shaped enclosures with what look like long kite tails, offering the best view, to date, of these important hunting tools.

The second feature, the canal system in northern Iraq, provides insight into how an early empire maintained its power and governed, Hammer explains. "The Assyrians built the first large, long-lasting, multi-cultural empire of the ancient world, so many people are interested in how they organized territory, controlled people, built their huge cities, and managed the land," she says. "The irrigation system fed the royal capitals, made agricultural surplus production possible, and provided water to villages."

Finally, the U2 images of southern Iraq present the layout, size, and environmental position of Marsh Arab communities in the late 1950s and early 1960s, many of which disappeared after massive hydroelectric dams in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq impounded the rivers, and especially after the government of Saddam Hussein deliberately drained the marshes. Before that, "people lived a unique lifestyle there for thousands of years, herding water buffalo, building houses and all manner of things out of reeds, living on floating islands of reeds, planting date palms, and fishing," Hammer says. "Now we can study the spatial organization, demography, and lifestyles of these communities."


Though the three archaeological features represent different historical time scales, going back thousands of years or just decades, they all demonstrate how humans are changing the natural landscape, often in ways visible only from a 70,000-foot view.

Aerial images like those from the U2 spy missions allow archaeologists like Hammer and Ur to travel back in time. "The activities of ancient human communities frequently left large-scale traces on the landscape," Hammer says. "You can't see these patterns when you're standing on top of them, but just like stepping back from the blobs of paint on an Impressionist painting reveals the full picture, aerial and satellite imagery allow the patterns to emerge."

In the National Museum of Damascus, archaeologist Muntajab Youssef works on an ancient stone bust from Palmyra, one of hundreds of artefacts his team is painstakingly restoring after they were damaged by Islamic State.

Centuries-old statues and sculptures were wrecked by the jihadists when they twice seized control of the old city in central Syria during the country’s war, which will go into its ninth year in March.

The 1,800-year-old bust of a bejewelled and richly clothed woman, The Beauty of Palmyra, was damaged during the first offensive on the city by Islamic State fighters in 2015.


After Syrian government forces took back the city with Russian military support in March 2016, the bust, alongside other damaged ancient monuments, was taken to Damascus and archived in boxes. When restoration work on it began last year, Youssef said it was in pieces.

“The hands and face were lost completely, also parts of the dress and there are areas that are weaker,” Youssef, who has been working on the bust for two months, said.

Youssef is one of 12 archaeologists working on the arduous restoration job, which first began with the of moving the damaged pieces to Damascus.

Mamoun Abdulkarim, the former Head of Syrian Antiquities, said that in some cases broken artefacts were transported in empty ammunition boxes provided by the Syrian army in Palmyra.


How many artefacts there are in total is difficult to say, given the state they were found in.

The lack of documentation for the artefacts also adds to the restoration challenge.

“A big part of the documentation in the Palmyra museum, was damaged with the antiquities and computers,” archaeologist Raed Abbas said. “A statue needs pictures … in order to be rebuilt.”

Greek stone inscription unearthed in Si’a Hill, Sweida


During its work and field follow-up in the Si’a Hill archaeological site, the Sweida Antiquities Department unearthed an 80 cm-long and 40 cm-wide stone inscription in Greek.

Head of Sweida Antiquities Department Dr. Nashat Kiwan told SANA that the inscription was discovered in cooperation with the locals of the area and the preliminary analysis after reading the inscription suggests that it most likely belongs to the temples which had been built at the top of the hill.

Kiwan added that the inscription contains the name of a person who appears to have enjoyed a high status and had the honour of contributing to the building of a small stadium or a place for practicing athletic games within the site of the temples complex.


Kiwan noted that the inscription isn’t mentioned in historical or archaeological sources and may thus provide important information on the Si’a Hill archaeological site.

Si’a Hill is considered as one of the most important classical archaeological sites in southern Syria as it dates back to the Nabatean era and the Roman and Byzantine periods.
