Roman chariot burial discovered in Croatia


Archaeologists in Croatia have unearthed the fossilised remains of a Roman chariot buried along with two horses as part of a burial ritual.

A large burial chamber for an 'extremely wealthy family' was found in which the carriage with what appears to be two horses had been lain.


Archaeologists from the City Museum Vinkovci and Institute of Archaeology from Zagreb discovered the Roman carriage on two wheels (known in Latin as a cisium) with horses at the Jankovacka Dubrava site close to the village of Stari Jankovci, near the city of Vinkovci, in eastern Croatia.

The discovery is believed to be an example of how those with extreme wealth were sometimes buried along with their horses.

Curator Boris Kratofil explained to local media that the custom of burial under tumuli (an ancient burial mound) was an exceptional burial ritual during the Roman period in the south of the Pannoinan Basin.

He said: 'The custom is associated with extremely wealthy families who have played a prominent role in the administrative, social and economic life of the province of Pannonia.'


The discovery is estimated to be from the third century AD but the team of scientists are working to confirm its age.

The director of the Institute of Archaeology Marko Dizdar said that it was a sensational discovery which is unique in Croatia.

He said: 'After this comes a long process of restoration and conservation of the findings, but also a complete analysis of the findings.

'In a few years we will know a little more about the family whose members were buried in this area 1,800 years ago.

'We are more interested in the horses themselves, that is, whether they were bred here or came from other parts of the empire, which will tell us more about the importance and wealth of this family.

'We will achieve this through cooperation with domestic as well as numerous European institutions.'

Earliest evidence of artificial cranial deformation in Croatia during 5th-6th century


People in Croatia during the 5th to 6th centuries may have used cranial modifications to indicate their cultural affiliations, according to a study published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE led by Ron Pinhasi of the University of Vienna and Mario Novak of the Institute for Anthropological Research in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Hermanov vinograd archaeological site in Osijek Croatia has been known since the 1800s. A new pit excavated in 2013 contained three human skeletons dating to 415-560 CE, during the Great Migration Period, a time of significant movement and interaction of various European cultures.


Two of the skeletons showed dramatically modified head shapes, one whose skull had been lengthened obliquely and another whose skull had been compressed and heightened. This is the oldest known incidence of Artificial Cranial Deformation (ACD) in Croatia.

ACD is the practice of modifying the skull from infancy to create a permanently altered shape, often to signify social status. In this study, genetic, isotopic and skeletal analysis of the bodies revealed that all were males between 12 and 16 years of age at death and that they all suffered from malnutrition.


They are not obviously of different social status, but genetic analysis found that the two with cranial modifications exhibited very distinct ancestries, one from the Near East and the other from East Asia. The latter is the first individual from the Migration Period with a majority East Asian ancestry to be found in Europe.

The authors suggest the ACD observed here may have functioned to distinguish members of different cultural groups as these groups interacted closely during the Migration Period. From the evidence at hand, it is unclear if these individuals were associated with Huns, Ostrogoths, or another population. It is also unclear whether the use of ACD to signify cultural identity was a widespread practice or something peculiar to these individuals.

Dr Novak adds: "The most striking observation, based on nuclear ancient DNA, is that these individuals vary greatly in their genetic ancestries: the individual without artificial cranial deformation shows broadly West Eurasian associated-ancestry, the individual with the so-called circular-erect type cranial deformation has Near Eastern associated-ancestry, while the individual with the elongated skull has East Asian ancestry."

Researchers found that the prehistoric hominins were hunting eagles for their talons and feathers rather than for their meat, like they did other birds, such as crows.

Eagle bones and talons have been found across dozens of sites in central and western Europe occupied by both Neanderthals and humans.


They looked at how frequently eagle bones were found  in prehistoric human sites to see if they were more prevalent among neanderthal societies.

The team not only found golden eagle remains at 26 sites, but that they had cut marks along the wing bones suggesting that the feathers were carefully extracted.

The findings suggest that the bones were used to adorn necklaces, lending more credence to evidence that Neanderthals led much more sophisticated lives than originally thought.

Before the neanderthals went extinct, they overlapped with humans who came from Europe around forty thousand years ago.

It was assumed that neanderthals went extinct because humans were smarter but according to new research by The Gibraltar National Museum, this wasn't the case.


According to researchers in the Quaternary Science Review, three talons from a white-tailed eagle were found in a Neanderthal site in Croatia, which have small matching notches suggesting they were strung on a necklace.

'If you're doing things with feathers and claws, it's going beyond purely functional and there's something symbolic there,' said Clive Finlayson at The Gibraltar National Museum.

To see if this was just because golden eagles were more common at the time, they compared this figure with numbers of unmarked bones found in caves, for golden eagles, as well as other birds.

For most bird species, the number of cut-marked remains correlated with the number of bones found.

The team said that golden eagle talons stood out as being 'more likely' to show marks from human intervention indicating that they were preferred.


'Everywhere there are historic examples of people using eagles, they were treated as a symbolic species,' David Frayer of the University of Kansas told the New Scientist.

'Neanderthals weren't treating eagles as meat, like they did crows but they were choosing them for talons and feathers.

I think that's a strong piece of evidence that Neanderthals had the same kinds of feelings about eagles as more recent people.'

1st century shipwreck found off Croatia’s Molat island


A shipwreck dating back to the 1st century AD has been discovered in the sea near the island of Molat and the archaeological site is intact and preserved, Dino Taras, head of the Zadar Museum of Archaeology’s Department for Marine Archaeology, has said.

The archaeological site was discovered at the depth of 20 metres in the immediate vicinity of the island of Molat and as such is very suitable for archaeological research.


It covers an area of 75 square metres, and the ship load found consists of tegulae and imbrex roof tiles used in ancient architecture.

After desalination, the archaeological finds will be checked for possibly more precise dating.

Zadar archaeologists have already made discoveries of ancient shipwrecks near Molat, in the area of Silba and Premuda islands.

Archaeologists identify first prehistoric figurative cave art in Balkans


An international team, led by an archaeologist from the University of Southampton and the University of Bordeaux, has revealed the first example of Palaeolithic figurative cave art found in the Balkan Peninsula.

Dr Aitor Ruiz-Redondo worked with researchers from the universities of Cantabria (Spain), Newfoundland (Canada), Zagreb (Croatia) and the Archaeological Museum of Istria (Croatia) to study the paintings, which could be up to 34,000 years old.


The cave art was first discovered in 2010 in Romualdova Pećina ('Romuald's cave') at Istria in Croatia, when Darko Komšo, Director of the Archaeological Museum of Istria, noticed the existence of the remains of a red colour in a deep part of the cave.

Following his discovery, the team led by Dr Ruiz-Redondo and funded by the French State and the Archaeological Museum of Istria, with the support of Natura Histrica, undertook a detailed analysis of the paintings and their archaeological context.

This led to the identification of several figurative paintings, including a bison, an ibex and two possible anthropomorphic figures, confirming the Palaeolithic age of the artworks. Furthermore, an excavation made in the ground below these paintings led to the discovery of a number of Palaeolithic age remains; a flint tool, an ochre crayon and several fragments of charcoal.


Radiocarbon dating of these objects show an estimated age of around 17,000 years and other indirect data suggest the paintings date to an even earlier period - at around 34,000-31,000 years ago. Further research will be conducted in order to establish the precise age of the rock art.

This discovery expands the so far sparse register of Palaeolithic art in south east Europe. It makes Romualdova Pećina the first site where figurative Palaeolithic rock art has been discovered in this area. Together with Badanj in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the two are the only examples of rock art from the Palaeolithic period in the Balkans.

Dr Aitor Ruiz-Redondo, a British Academy-funded Newton International Fellow at the University of Southampton and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bordeaux, said: "The importance of this finding is remarkable and sheds a new light on the understanding of Palaeolithic art in the territory of Croatia and the Balkan Peninsula, as well as its relationship with simultaneous phenomena throughout Europe."

The findings are published in the journal Antiquity.

Medieval skeleton revealed at site of Diocletian’s Palace in Croatia


A skeleton has been discovered under stone slabs during the installation of new high-voltage cables in the People's Square or Pjaca, located in the area once occupied by the Diocletian’s Palace, in Split.

The skeleton lies on the remains of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Sv. Lovre), said to be one of the earliest churches in Split, local news sources reported.


"Finding skeletons in this location is nothing out of the ordinary. Namely, around the church itself, after it was demolished, it was buried quite deep. We assume that the cathedral was built at the end of the fifth or early sixth century, and was demolished in the 15th century. Afterwards, the Pjaca or People's Square was built here during the Renaissance transformation. The Pjaca is historically known as Sv. Lovre Square and the church itself dates back to the late antiquity. It is one of the earliest Split churches,” says Dr. Radoslav Bužančić, head of the Conservation Department.


"The skeleton itself will be studied, and further research will determine what will happen to it next", said Dr Bužančić. "This archaeological find illustrates the transformation of Diocletian's Palace into the ancient city, showing the expansion from the palace to the west", he adds.

During excavations conducted in 1978 southwest of the City Hall, in the middle of the Square, at a depth of only 30 to 50 cm, a medieval cemetery was discovered with a total of 24 graves with skeletal remains.

Cattle pulled loads 2,000 years earlier than previously thought


In the study, published in Antiquity, archaeologists discovered that the bones in the feet of Neolithic cattle demonstrated distinctive wear patterns, indicative of exploitation as ‘animal engines’. If these practices can be proven elsewhere, it is expected to have major ramifications on our understanding of animal use in the Neolithic.

Lead author Dr Jane Gaastra (UCL Archaeology), said: “We have been able to provide the first conclusive evidence that farmers were using cattle for ‘traction’ almost 2,000 years earlier than the previous consensus date. There has only been one other foot sample from the Neolithic period found in Syria but this was inconclusive.

“The part of the Balkans where we found the bones was heavy forested in the Neolithic period, so chopping trees to create settlements would have required lot of man power. Cattle would therefore have been a vital asset helping to transport items such timber for housing.”

The study was conducted in the central and western Balkans and shows that the earliest European farmers were not simply using cattle as a source of meat or dairy products, but also as a source of propulsion. The findings indicate that traction in some form, and not necessarily through the use of ploughs or wagons, was present much earlier than previously thought.


Most other studies have focused on the use of traction in much later periods, because it has often been conflated with ploughing or the use of carts which came much later.

Fundamentally, however, traction is the use of animals as engines to pull loads. While ploughing and cartage are forms of traction, they represent only two types of activity on a much broader spectrum of exploitive practices from specialised animals bred and used for regular work through to animals used for more occasional pulling activities, or for regular labour over a short number of years.

Co-author Dr Marc Vander Linden (formerly of UCL Archaeology, now at University of Cambridge), said: “Until now it has generally been considered that traction only emerged by the 5th and 4th millennium BC, parallel to the introduction of the plough and the wheel, but our study demonstrates that this is not the case.


“We reveal that when the wheel and the plough became available farmers were already experienced in using cattle for traction, and this could have facilitated the spread of these innovations.”

The researchers investigated 12 cattle foot bone samples, from both male and female cattle (predominantly cows), from 11 Neolithic sites in the central and western Balkans (modern-day Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bosnia-Herzegovina) spanning from 6,000 to 4,500 BC. The sites were open air settlements from multiple phases of the Neolithic.

Foot bone was chosen as it is most affected by the stress of pulling and happens to be most commonly preserved in the archaeological record. In determining traction, the archaeologists were looking for extra bone growth in the inner part of the foot, as this is typically where the foot takes most of the load.


The researchers hope to replicate the study in other European regions to determine the extent and duration of this form of traction. It is still unknown whether this form of traction is seen in only a selection of Neolithic groups or was a common practice across Europe. A firm understanding of the nature of early traction evidence in prehistoric Europe has significant implications for our knowledge of both management practices and the nature of labour and movement in prehistoric societies.

Dr Gaastra concluded: “What is now needed is a wider comparative assessment of sub-pathological evidence for cattle traction in Neolithic (and post-Neolithic) Europe to determine both how widely this pattern of early traction was distributed and at what point we begin to see evidence for specialised heavy-traction animals.”

The hominins of Sima de los Huesos are drawing ever closer to the Neanderthals


The Dental Anthropology Group of the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH) has just published a paper on dental histology in the journal Comptes Rendus PALEVOL, in which a comparison is made for the first time between the sample from the Sima de los Huesos site, in Atapuerca (Burgos), and dental samples from the Neanderthal site of Krapina, in Croatia, as well as with different modern human populations.

This is a comparative study centering on the canines, in which certain dental pieces from Homo antecessor were included, whose results make it clear that the Pleistocene populations at Atapuerca already showed the pattern considered typically Neanderthal in their enamel and dentine volumes.


“The teeth from Sima de los Huesos exhibit large coronal and root dentine dimensions, as well as thin enamel. This histological pattern has traditionally been considered a distinctive trait of the Neanderthals, and it has allowed them to be distinguished both from other groups and from modern humans”, according to Cecilia García Campos, lead author of the paper.

Further, the results of this study might support an early appearance of this highly characteristic dental trait, which had been observed as early as 800,000 years ago in Homo antecessor, and maintained in later groups during the Middle Pleistocene.


The fossils found at Sima de los Huesos were initially considered to belong to the taxon Homo heidelbergensis, a species which populated Europe before the Neanderthals, so named from the mandible found in the locality of Heidelberg (Germany).

Nevertheless, a study led by Juan Luis Arsuaga, Centro Mixto UCM-ISCIII de Evolución y Comportamiento Humanos de Madrid, published in 2014 in the journal Science, raised doubts about this assignment, and suggested removing the population at Sima from this taxon because of its evident similarities to Homo neanderthalensis.


Later, two genetic studies of Sima de los Huesos, published in the journal Nature in 2014 and 2016, underpinned this decision by showing that these hominins belonged to the Neanderthal evolutionary lineage because of their close relationship to the ancestors of the Neanderthals.

“The dental histology results obtained for the individuals at la Sima de los Huesos support the close relationship there must have been between the Middle Pleistocene hominins at Atapuerca and the later Neanderthal groups living in Europe”, adds García Campos.

3,500-year-old olive pits discovered in Croatia's Pasman Channel


Archaeologists from Zadar have come across a variety of finds dating back to the Middle Bronze Age in the sea between the isle of Ricul in the Pasman Channel and the coastal resort of Turanj, including numerous 3,500-years-old olive pits, which speak to the oldest olive groves along Croatia's Adriatic.

In northern Dalmatia, little was known about the Middle Bronze Age until archaeologists began underwater explorations several years ago.


Well-preserved organic material trapped in thick marine growth layers has provided them with data they can very rarely obtain on land, enriching the knowledge about Pre-Liburnian communities living there about three millennia ago.

The University of Zadar Department of Archaeology is conducting systematic researches in the area thanks to the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, among others.

The fifth underwater archaeological campaign is currently under way, with experts digging on Ricul isle to see if there is a cultural link between the isle and the seabed location.


Archaeologists have found numerous pieces of prehistoric ceramics, a rectangular object made of stone, possibly the remains of a fence, and the remains of a thick wall. "Those are probably the remains of a defensive wall which protected the Bronze Age settlement from possible dangers from land," said research leader Mate Ilkic.

They have also found stone tools as well as numerous olive pits, about 3,500 years old, inside a prehistoric marine growth layer, dated thanks to the radiocarbon analysis of wood pillars at the Middle Bronze Age.

"Already at the beginning of the research several years ago, one pit was found in Ricul's seabed, but it wasn't enough for analysis. At least 40 are necessary and now hundreds have been found," says Ilkic.


The pits will be scanned at the Zagreb School of Agriculture to determine the species, which may still exist in northern Dalmatia, he adds.

Archaeologists have found other pits as well, apparently cherries, Ilkic says, adding that the Pre-Liburnian community had a good and diverse diet.

"They did not lack meat, as indicated by the discovery of many bones of various domestic animals, cattle, goats and sheep and, judging by the millstones for grinding grains, they also had bread," he says, adding that the fact that the community lived by the sea indicates they also ate fish.

Archaeological excavations at Croatia's Vinkovci site completed


Archaeological excavations on the site of a future municipal library in the eastern town of Vinkovci have been completed after three rounds of digging carried out in 2011, 2015 and 2018 unearthed over 2000 valuable finds, including antique ceramic ware, silver cutlery, bowls, ivory ware and other items from Roman and Ottoman times.

Most of the items date back to the period between the first and fifth centuries A.D. and have been unearthed from waste ditches and wells, the head of the archaeological team Hrvoje Vulic said recently.


He pointed out the special value of two Roman gold coins with the images of Roman emperors Valens and Valentinian who were born in Colonia Aurelia Cibalae, the ancient Roman name of present-day Vinkovci. The coins were found in a well.

In 2012, the archaeologists reported that they had found a closet with silver cutlery, bowls, plates and platters. Some pieces were gilded and some had engraved decorations showing animals, herbs and human images. They weighed over 30 kilograms. The find was the result of the archaeological exploration of the former Roman colony Colonia Aurelia Cibalae.

Vinkovci Mayor Ivan Bosancic said that all this confirms that Vinkovci is rich in archaeological finds.

Divers find mysterious safe of 19th century ship 'Re d'Italia'


A diving team from Komiža, led by Lorenzo Marović and his son Andy, found a mysterious safe in the wreckage of the ship “Re d'Italia”, which was sunk during the Battle of Vis in 1866, Croatian news sources reported.

According to historians, it is quite possible that the safe contains the gold which was allegedly meant to help put Dalmatia under the Italian authority. “We had to wait for 13 years to confirm this finding. We will surely have to wait now a certain time to find out what is in the safe. For now, we have received oral approval for further dives,” said Andy.


Lorenzo discovered the exact position of the ship while searching for corals in 2005. The wreckage is located at the depth of 115 metres, 7 nautical miles north of Vis in the direction of Rogoznica. However, the discovery was accompanied by problems, primarily with future Culture Minister Jasen Mesić, who was at the time head of the Ministry of Culture's Conservation Department. He led a French-Croatian team which investigated the wreckage just days after Marović found the remains of the ship.

They launched a court dispute which Marović lost at the Split court, in a procedure which he still considers controversial. “The court has grossly violated my rights by not taking into account all the evidence I had about the discovery. That is precisely one of the reasons why we immediately publicly announced this discovery,” said Marović.


A historical legend claims that the safe is filled with a certain amount of funds in the form of golden ducats, which were supposed to represent a basis for the opening of a banking system in Dalmatia that would serve to turn Dalmatians into Italians. Some people call it “silent colonization.”

If the content of the safe is confirmed, Marović could receive a reward of 10 percent of the estimated value, which is potentially assessed in the tens of millions of euro.


“Nowadays, we, fortunately, have a full cooperation with the Conservation Office in Split. With regard to the value of the safe, it is difficult to estimate it. It is suspected to be around 250,000 Italian lira of the time. But the most important thing for me is to keep this discovery for our children. There are 391 souls which were lost on the ship and they want peace and quiet, but now we have a lot of commotion there from people diving.

Wreck of 2,000-year-old Roman ship found near Croatia's island of Pag


While diving with a group of tourists near the Croatian island of Pag, Vedran Dorušić, president of the Diving Tourism Organisation at the Croatian Chamber of Economy, stumbled upon a wreck of a Roman ship believed to date to the beginning of the first century BC.

The wreck was lying completely on the sea floor and was slowly falling apart. Around 600 amphorae are said to be scattered about the wreck.

Although more investigations will be carried out, it is believed that the ship may have sought shelter from the bura winds in the bay of Simuni on Pag, where there are vestiges of a Roman harbour.

“The latest archaeological finding in Croatian waters has led the Ministry of Culture, with the cooperation of diving centres, to protect these sites with video surveillance and other measures and to develop new ways to help tourism promotion,” Dorišić is reported to have said.

Archaeologists make sweet discovery at underwater site in Croatia


Scientists from Zadar’s Archaeological Museum found luxury ceramics designed to make sugar near Pag, a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, confirming life has always been sweet on one of Croatia's breezier islands.

The site contains the remnants of either a pier or sunken cargo ship dating back to some time between the 14th and 16th centuries, around when new city of Pag was being built,

The items, designed for sugar production, were discovered at St. Nicholas’s point in Pag’s bay, where archaeologists have been conducting an underwater dig.

"In the underwater world of St. Nicholas, we discovered luxurious tableware, fine ceramics, remnants belonging to a category of luxury present in the most important cities in Dalmatia," Dr.

Manenica is conducting the search alongside colleague Mario Radaljac, the museum’s curator of the Department of Underwater Archaeology.

The archaeological search began in earnest after some remnants were found pointing to a potential underwater site. The archaeologists have been combing the sands of the point daily, thanks to funding from the City of Pag.

Radaljac said findings from the site will be presented to the public when all of its contents have been found, promising to organize a presentation and lecture that will “draw the public’s interest.”
